Deep Eddy’s Retro Graphics

The design that helped fund the bathhouse lives on.

By Rob Miller

A little over two decades ago the Deep Eddy Pool bathhouse was largely unusable and in tragic disrepair. A driving force behind the founding of the Friends of Deep Eddy (FODE) organization in 2002 was the desire to renovate the old limestone bathhouse.

When it became clear that the restoration of the circa-1936 bathhouse to modern standards would cost over a million dollars, the FODE leaders knew they needed a strong fundraising campaign. Founding FODE President Leon Barish was at the helm, and Paul Bardagjy and I met to get the ball rolling on a plan for a logo, identity and marketing. Colleague Kim Bond and I then teamed up to create concepts and resulting designs for the Deep Eddy tiered roof logo, fundraising brochure, diver T-shirt design and pool signage graphics. The design elements drew from 1930s Great Depression era style when Deep Eddy Pool – Texas’ oldest outdoor swimming pool – was built, down to the typeface chosen.

We are proud that FODE’s restoration campaign was successful, and over twenty years later the design is still used to symbolize and serve the pool we love so much. You, too, can make a donation and get a free Deep Eddy shirt by clicking here!

See you around the deep end!
